Taking your pet from Korea to Guam

Guam is rabies-free and runs its own quarantine rules. The longest step is the 120-day wait after the titer test, and those 120 days are counted from the day the laboratory receives the sample, not the day the blood was drawn. The entry permit also has to be filed at least 30 days before arrival, so leave yourself room in the schedule.

This only calculates the waiting period. Guam counts the 120 days from the day the laboratory receives the sample, so if you entered the blood draw date, the real entry date may fall later by however long international shipping takes. It does not check the vaccination order, document deadlines or airline conditions.

The essentials

Step by step

Order matters. A vaccination given before the microchip is not accepted, and the waiting period only starts once the laboratory has the sample. The titer result also expires — it must have been run within 12 months of arrival — so testing too early causes its own problem.

  1. Microchip

    First

    Guam requires a microchip that can be read with an AVID universal scanner at arrival inspection (AVID, HomeAgain and similar). It must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, and the chip number must match across every document.

  2. First rabies vaccination

    After the chip · at 90 days of age or older

    Only doses given at three months (90 days) of age or older are valid. Vaccinate after the microchip has been implanted, and ask for the certificate in English.

  3. Second rabies vaccination

    At least 30 days after the first

    Give it at least 30 days after the first dose. Guam requires at least two lifetime doses, and the most recent one must still be current at the time of release (365 days for a one-year vaccine, 36 months for an approved three-year vaccine). If you have just given a booster, wait at least 10 days before the blood draw.

  4. Rabies titer test (OIE-FAVN blood draw)

    After the second dose · at least 10 days after vaccination

    Blood is drawn to measure the rabies antibody level. The result must be 0.5 IU/mL or higher, and only OIE-FAVN results from a Guam-approved laboratory (the Kansas State University Rabies Laboratory, RIAS in Japan and others) are accepted. The laboratory must send the results directly to the Guam Department of Agriculture, and the test must have been run within 12 months of arrival. Do not vaccinate for rabies after the blood has been drawn. A titer of 1.0 IU/mL or higher may qualify for 5-Day-or-Less release.

  5. 120-day waiting period

    Laboratory receipt = day 0

    Your pet can enter Guam only once 120 days have passed since the laboratory received the sample. The clock starts at receipt, not at the blood draw, so allow for international shipping.   6. Apply for the Guam entry permit (DOAG)

    At least 30 days before arrival

    Submit the Application for Animal Entry Permit and the supporting documents to the Guam Department of Agriculture. To allow time for review and processing, it must be filed at least 30 days before arrival. Submissions made less than 14 days before entry are not guaranteed to be processed in time and may result in prolonged quarantine or denial of entry.

  7. Health certificate and parasite treatment

    Certificate within 10 days · treatment within 14 days of arrival

    An accredited veterinarian must issue the health certificate within 10 days of arrival. Your pet must also be treated for internal parasites (helminths and heartworms) and external parasites (fleas and ticks) within 14 days of arrival, with the treatment recorded. This applies to cats as well as dogs.

  8. Export quarantine certificate

    From 10 days before departure

    This is the export quarantine step Korea applies when a pet leaves the country. APQA issues the certificate, and booking through the pet export quarantine reservation system lets you collect it from 10 days before departure.

  9. Departure and arrival in Guam

    Departure day

    The Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency (CQA) asks you to book the clearance appointment at the arrival airport in advance. There is no fixed arrival-time cut-off as in Hawaii, but arrange the Guam clearance slot at the same time as you book your flights.

Are vaccinations other than rabies required?

Yes. Guam also requires core vaccinations. Dogs need distemper, infectious hepatitis (adenovirus-2), leptospirosis, parainfluenza and parvovirus, plus kennel cough; cats need panleukopenia, herpesvirus and calicivirus. They must be given at least 10 days before departure and still be current on arrival.

Is the 120-day wait counted from the blood draw?

No — it is counted from the day the laboratory receives the sample. Shipping the sample from Korea takes time, so counting from the draw date puts your estimate several days early. If you can confirm the receipt date, use that.

Can we just do the titer test well in advance?

Not too far in advance. Guam only accepts a test run within 12 months of arrival. In other words you need to arrive after the 120 days have passed but before the result turns a year old, so set your departure inside that window.

My pet has just had a booster. When can blood be drawn?

Wait at least 10 days after the booster before the blood draw. And once the blood has been drawn, Guam’s rule is not to vaccinate for rabies again.

What kind of microchip does Guam need?

One that can be read with an AVID universal scanner at arrival inspection (AVID, HomeAgain and similar). If your pet is already chipped, ask your vet to confirm it scans before you travel.

Is the process the same for cats?
